Losing Hair? Here are some facts.

In what percentage of the population does hair loss occur?

Everyone loses anywhere from fifty to one hundred and fifty hairs a day. In most cases, hair will begin to regrow. However, this regrowth does not occur if the hair follicle is thinned. Natural aging and fluctuations in the male hormone androgen cause hair loss to occur in men to varying degrees throughout the course of their lifetimes. Hair thinning is also a possibility for women.

Is it possible that my actions may be contributing to the development of male or female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia)? And what about my high stress levels? My shampoo?

There is no evidence that tight scalp muscles, mental stress, washing frequency, shampoo choice, or skin problems contribute to male or female pattern baldness. However, hair loss can be caused by a number of medical issues. The Penn group can help you figure out what’s causing your hair loss and what you can do about it.

How viable am I as a patient for hair transplantation?

Hair on the scalp and the back of the head should be in good condition before considering hair transplant surgery. We harvest grafts from these donor sites. Hair restoration surgery is a viable option for men and women who have noticeable hair loss owing to baldness, thinning hair, or scalp injury or several cosmetic operations. During your first appointment with the Penn team, they will go through all of the available treatment choices with you.

Does it pain to have this done?

Pain relief is ensured with the use of local anesthetics and intravenous sedation.

Can I still swim and do other sports if I have new hair?

Within five to seven days of finishing therapy, you will feel well enough to return to your regular routine. Hair transplants are permanent and can be styled and colored normally.

When will my hair transplants start to thin?

The hair that grows from an autograft performed by transplanting hair from the back and sides of your scalp to your thinning areas will continue to do so for the rest of your life.

So, You Need Replacement?

Who can receive a transplant, exactly?

Successful treatment of hair loss depends on your ambition and motivation to get a more attractive hairline and greater hair density. Your surgeon will let you know if there is anything about your case that may prevent you from receiving optimal results from our hair replacement methods during your initial appointment.

Our hair restoration methods can be used by anyone of any age or gender with no adverse effects. Successful surgeries have been performed on patients as old as 70. Hair loss due to male or female pattern can be effectively managed in those who are in their thirties. Patients of any age may be candidates; however, they should be treated with caution if they are. Women who have experienced a certain type of hair loss may also be candidates.

The best candidates for hair transplant surgery have full, healthy manes on the back and sides of their heads. To disguise the early stages of the restoration, it is best to begin while the baldness is not totally complete.

  • Possible candidates for hair transplantation include:
  •
  • Those who clearly exhibit either male or female pattern baldness.
  •
  • People whose hair has fallen out as a result of scars, scalp injury, or cosmetic surgery.
  •
  • People who have lost or thin eyebrows, mustaches, or beards and want to grow them back.
  •
  • People who have previously undergone hair restoration treatments.
  •

In other words, what exactly is microblend grafting?

With male or female pattern baldness, the top and front of the scalp thin out. Good news: your scalp’s back and sides are hardwired to keep growing forever. You’ll be harvesting tissue from the “horseshoe” shaped areas on your back and sides. Eventually, hair that was grafted (an autograft) from these locations to your thinning spots will begin to grow and continue to do so.

Autografted hair from healthy donor sites on your scalp will take root and grow properly in the balding (receiver) portions of your scalp if you have donor dominance.

Micrografts (follicular unit grafts) or minigrafts (smaller grafts) may be used (follicular groupings). One to three hair follicles are contained in each micrograft. The average number of hairs in a follicular group is between four and six. Traditional “punch” grafts used to have 10-20 follicles.

Follicular grafts’ benefits include the growth of fine, sensitive hair that is more like your natural hair before you started thinning. One to three hair transplants are used to create the most realistic looking hairline because this is the area where hair density gradually increases from the forehead to the back of the head.

What steps are taken to carry out the operation?

In order to restore your hair, a surgeon will cut out a thin layer of scalp from the back and sides of your head. Hair from this donor area will continue to grow for the rest of your life. After the strip is removed, the incision site is meticulously stitched shut, leaving behind only a barely perceptible scar that blends well with the surrounding hair.

Then, our experienced surgeons use microscopy to separate the harvested strip of hair-bearing scalp into smaller pieces that can be implanted into the balding parts of your scalp. Depending on your goals and scalp health, these grafts can be modified into a range of different sizes. Unlike other hair loss solutions, the grafted hairs look and behave much like natural hair. To achieve fullness in the back, we’ll be employing follicular units that include more hairs.

All potential for distress during the operation can be numbed using a combination of local anesthetic and intravenous sedative. Our experts will ensure that your new hairs will grow in the same direction, creating a natural-looking hairline and thicker hair overall.

How long does therapy typically last?

It’s common to need to schedule multiple sessions at varying times. With minimal intervention, most patients can obtain a healthy, complete appearance. For micrografting and hair transplantation, the average number of sessions per patient is 1-2, with each session spaced out over a few months. The average time for a medical office procedure is three to four hours.

After the operation, what can we expect?

Depending on the severity of the procedure, most patients can go back to work 24 hours following hair replacement.

After each treatment, hair is rinsed the following morning.

For the first five or seven days, you should avoid engaging in strenuous physical activity.

Potential swelling is treated with medication. Itching and crusting at the treatment sites are common side effects, and they may last for seven to 10 days. In most cases, the sensation of numbness at the donor or recipient site will go away after a few weeks to a few months. Meetings for checking in every four to six months to see how things are going and see what kind of results have been achieved are planned

What kind of outcomes can we count on?

Scarring is minimal, if any, after a micrograft procedure. A lot of hair that will be used in future transplants is also preserved in this process. Your donor hair’s density, the number of treatments, and the severity of your hair loss all affect how much of your scalp can be covered.

Within a month, the majority of the transplanted hair will fall out. About 90 to 100 days later, fresh hair growth begins and persists at a typical rate. The transplanted hairs begin to seem natural about six months following the procedure and will continue to grow for the rest of your life. Once the hair has been removed, the donor site will heal to the point where the incision line will be hardly visible and will be entirely concealed by the surrounding hair.

Will there be any post-operative problems?

There is always a chance of something going wrong during surgery. In spite of this, surgical interventions for hair loss are generally safe and result in few if any problems. There is a low risk of serious bleeding and/or infection. In general, you shouldn’t take aspirin or any other NSAIDs, as well as other pharmaceuticals and herbal supplements, in the days leading up to surgery. Talk to your doctor about your unique worries.
