HIDDEN PARADISE ON EARTH

Muğla

Muğla is the name of the province which comprises well-known districts and towns of Marmaris, Bodrum, Fethiye, Akyaka, Dalyan, Göcek and many more. The province is administered from the central district Menteşe and it has thirteen districts in total. The geography is spectacular. There are 71 natural protected areas within the city and 64% of the whole land is covered with forests. Some of these forests are sweetgum forests which are endemic to the region. This huge green cover also means that there are numerous farming activities carried out. The most significant activity apart from agricultural production is apiculture. Mugla is the biggest pine honey producer, not only in Turkiye, but also in the world. Besides, the aquaculture income has risen as much as 1 billion dollars annually within the recent years. The city is also famous for its marble resources. Marble is the second export item which brings a considerable amount of income and provides employment opportunities in the city. The geography’s blessings are not limited to those mentioned above. The paradisiacal beaches and coves, and the miscellaneous activities created around them attract as many as three million foreign nationals to the city. The city itself, due to its specific coastal type, has a coastline of 1480 kilometres. This allows for extensive touristic activities along the coasts of the city. Another contribution to the busy touristic visits is that the city has two international airports. It is only Muğla and Istanbul which have two international airports in Turkiye.

Another reason for Mugla to be considered a touristic resort is that the region has a 5000 years of human activity. Its history starts with Carians and than it was either occupied or resided by Dorians, Lydians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. This deep-rooted history has left as many as 195 ancient cities and their ruins, which have been constantly excavated and restored for years. Furthermore, 320 archaeological areas are protected by law.

Tourism activities have been the main touristic attraction for years but the last few years have seen fundamental changes in the understanding of conventional tourism. The strong infrastructure, latest technology and competitive prices in the health sector made way for a new type of tourism activity, which is also called health tourism. The region has a big potential and is waiting to be explored by those who have not had the privilege to be indulged by what it has to offer.
